In Amtrak's refund policies it is indicated that on a 20 percent cancellation fee there is a minimum of $5 and a maximum of $100. Has anyone had any experience with this? I am wondering, for example, if someone booked a $2000.00 sleeper trip and had to cancel, whether the cancellation fee would be $100 or $400.

Your can get a full refund in the form of a voucher. Can't remember if there are any restrictions when this can happen - such as # of days or hours before the trip or type of ticket (coach vs sleeper)

Don't count on this, but depending on circumstances Amtrak may waive the fee. My aunt was unable to accompany us from Seattle to Reno last September due to heart problems which began suddenly a month before the trip (she's recovering nicely now). Initially she requested a voucher, but when her condition took a while to stabilize she requested to convert the voucher to a cash refund. We were expecting to have the penalty deducted, but were pleasantly surprised to receive a full refund with no deductions.
