first experience with the "new system' booking a sleeper,  added to my misery is that i;m booking very last minute (high price} and "point shock" compared to the old zone system.

I understand that there's pretty much a 20% POIN Tpenalty if you cancel sleeper within 14 days of trip, right?

Today I booked first leg of trip with points, due to health issues, I might not be able to go, it's already within 14 days of my departure, so I lose points if I cancel

Then I booked the return with cash because it seems that the cash penalty is less onerous..10%, but then you can at least get a voucher if you cancel within 14 days.   I will know if I can't go down for a 16 day trip, if I  cancel I only lose 10% CASH.

QUESTION, is, if I depart  on time, can I call and ask that myreturn cash trip be switched to points?: I  suspect it's no....otherwise it's kind of a loophole in the system.

I think the worst part of this new system which they promoted as being "enhanced' is not the cost of more points on certain trips due to losing the zones, it's the taking away of flexibility with changes or cancellations, going from "total" to "little", esp. with the sleepers

I would call an AGR agent (NOT the regular agent) if this is necessary and explain the situation. They may have more flexibility.
Take it easy .......

Take the train instead and enjoy the ride!

The view is much better at 3 feet than it is at 30,000 feet!
