Hi everyone,

Introducing myself - stumbled across these forums from Reddit, and have already spent an hour or two reading! Lots of good info here :)

I hope you won't mind my throwing a few (many) questions out, I am planning a trip to the US in October-December next year and plan on travelling West to East coast on Amtrak.

Included below is a photo of one of my local trains. These are intercity trains running in my state of Victoria, Aus. Photo credit Jim Houghton.

Cheers,
Silmaril.

Welcome to the AU discussion forum. Australia is an interesting place to live or visit. Also, have you ridden the Ghan or the Indian Pacific? They are some of the best trains south of the Equator. And traveling around the US by Amtrak is one of the best way to do it. Also, consider spending a night or two between trains, so you can explore the area before catching your next train. Also if you have some extra money, I recommend that you upgrade to a sleeper, as it is worth the upgrade, for example meals are included, more comfortable than coachclass when you sleep, lounge access, shower access while on the train. On some trains, the sleeper cars are towards the back of the train, meaning that you get to view outside from the back window that coachclass passengers do not have the luxury of doing so on those trains.

Thank you for the welcome!

I haven't ridden either the Ghan or the Indian Pacific, though they are on my bucket list. Both are tourist-oriented trains, and the prices are high. As a comparison, you could fly for 1/4 of the price. Obviously that defeats the point of train travel, but gives you an idea!

I had been reading some good things about Coach on the Superliners, in that the leg room is decent. I am thinking about breaking the trip up, so as to explore some of the intermediate cities on the way, so might end up with a few segments in a roomette and a few in coach.
