NEWMARKET - With work beginning to wrap up on emergency repairs to the 108 railroad crossing in town Thursday morning workers were expecting Route 108 to be re-opened to traffic by the end of the work day.

Early Thursday morning crews were spreading crushed stone where the railroad bed had been dug up and were getting ready to prepare the area for repaving.

Drivers were rerouted beginning early Wednesday morning as Route 108 was closed due to the repairs, causing disruption in a local artery used daily by many drivers.

The repairs were announced earlier by Pan Am Railways and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

Town Administrator Steve Fournier explained that Pan Am was replacing a track panel necessary for Amtrak's Downeaster to travel at normal speeds.

Thursday morning, workers explained that a leaking water pipe has softened some of the a portion of the roadway under the tracks requiring the Downeaster to slow down. The work being completed today is expected to remedy this.

During the work passenger traffic has been detoured down New Road and truck traffic detoured to Hersey Lane, Grant Road to Route 152 to Route 108.
