I plan to travel to Texas in early January - requiring an overnight in New Orleans. Can anyone recommend a nearby, reasonably-priced hotel for a single woman traveling alone?

New Orleans Union Station is in an "interesting" part of town. Just beside the Expressway between the Superdome and a dicey neighborhood. The Hyatt Regency, Drury, Hotel Modern and Quality Inn are all within about 1/2 mile but not really close. The Streetcar runs right in front of the station. I might suggest riding the Streetcar a few blocks north to the Holiday Inn. If your train arrives after dark, take a cab and don't leave your hotel.

As was said, see the recent thread. Basically, there is no good reason to stay right by the station unless you have to. Many good options are not far away. Places in the Quarter might be reasonable then, and you might find good deals just west of Canal and in the Warehouse District, both not far.

You are probably looking for more secure accommodations but I will mention a couple of less pricey establishments. The Auberge and the India backpackers hostel both close to the 24 hour Streetcar, walking distance to the French Quarter and modestly priced at about $16.00 per night

In New Orleans, the most northern Caribbean city, the French Quarter has plenty of small historic hotels such as the Cornstalk, Andrew Jackson, and Place d'Armes. The Bourbon Orleans is my favorite large reasonable priced luxury hotel. Also check out the Royal Sonesta. If you're looking for security the French Quarter is the best patrolled area in town. Great food and music is everywhere. For music be sure to visit Frenchmen Street adjacent to the Quarter.

I traveled by myself in July 2014 and stayed at Le Pavillon. I enjoyed it and felt perfectly safe. It's about a half-mile or so from the train station and really close to the French Quarter.

Since it's on the way to the French Quarter, I was able to split a cab with a couple. The cab-assigning person at the train station sort of figured out where everyone was going and then tried to pair them off based on where they were going. Not only did it save people money, but it ensured there were enough cabs to go around. I'm not sure if this is standard practice there or if it was just because it was a busy day.
