Soggy Northwest Breaks October Rainfall Records

Seattle-based National Weather Service meteorologist Ni Cushmeer said....It's so wet, ...she had to clean the office's rain gauge with bleach because moss was starting to grow in it.

The forecaster doesn't blame climate change for one month of record rain. She said the rain totals fall within the range of natural variability.

The weather forecast for most places in the Northwest contains a chance of rain every day through Halloween. The outlook for November offers no relief. The NWS Climate Prediction Center gives a strong probability for above normal precipitation with temperatures in the normal range over the coming month for Washington, most of Oregon and the northern half of Idaho.

Despite all the rain in October, I don't believe there were any mudslide cancellations on the Cascades this month, IIRC.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the season.
 
According to what I've checked, the only Northwest alerts so far this month was for possible disruptions due to wind storms. And as for mountain snows, how does it look for this winter (anything like Feb-Mar 2014)?
 
Now that October is over (well, as of this writing in four hours' time) there have been no mudslides to disrupt the Empire Builder, the Cascades or Sounder commuter trains. And this in a month which broke the all time record (at least since 1946 when weather recordkeeping moved from the downtown Seattle Federal Building to SeaTac airport), at ten inches, more than a quarter of the annual rainfall in the Emerald City. Seems like the yeoman work on slope stabilization done by various entities has paid off. I know, the rainy season has just begun, and even if there should be future disruptions, hopefully we have turned a corner on this issue.

The suspension only causes passengers to detrain and board at Everette, the train continues empty to sea for servicing.

And they have a depressing amount of experience doing this.
 
Too much water makes stable areas vulnerable to slides

A working group with representatives from Edmonds, Mukilteo, Everett, the state Department of Transportation, BNSF and Sound Transit meets every other month to talk about potential slide issues, said Janet Matkin, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman....

Those slides have dropped significantly since a federal grant of $16.1 million paid for slide-prevention projects in six spots from Edmonds to Everett. The work, which was completed earlier this year, includes retaining walls to catch debris before it hits the tracks, slide-detection fences, slope stabilization and improved drainage systems.

The work seems to have been effective. Since July, there’s been six cancelled train trips, according to Sound Transit.

My Coast Starlight #11(10) is showing in Service Disruption before even leaving Seattle. Any news on if flooding is the reason?
 
In all my years visiting PDX never has winter weather done this. ere is Amtrak service notice. What kind of snow did the southern portion of Washington state get ?

Amtrak Service Disruptions in the Pacific Northwest Continue

Train Service Remains Suspended Between Seattle and Portland

January 11, 2017

1:30 p.m. PT

Amtrak Cascades and Amtrak Coast Starlight service between Seattle and Portland will remain suspended today due to severe weather and freight congestion on tracks operated by BNSF Railway Co, with no alternate transportation.

All Amtrak Cascades trains are canceled today between Seattle and Portland, with no alternate transportation. Amtrak Coast Starlight, train 11(11) is canceled between Seattle and Portland, with no alternate transportation. Amtrak Coast Starlight train 14(10) will terminate in Portland this evening to represent a late Amtrak Coast Starlight train 11(11), traveling to points south of Portland.

Amtrak Empire Builder train 27(11) is also canceled today between Portland and Spokane, WA due to weather related issues, with no alternate transportation.

Amtrak Cascades trains north of Seattle to Vancouver, B.C. and south of Portland to Eugene, Ore. continue to operate, subject to weather-related delays.

A friend in Gig Harbor (near Tacoma) posts that they are getting flurries. Here in Seattle, it has been cloudy most of the day, but we had no precipitation, and the skies have cleared now. Generally, SEA and PDX have very similar weather, but boy, not today.
 
Note to moderators: Since the recent trend is not limited to mudslides, I suggest the title of this topic be changed to "NW Inclement Weather Season 2016-17" or something similar to that, as the most recent postings don't seem to concern mudslides at all.

Amtrak services are temporarily disrupted between Portland, Oregon, and Everett, Washington, due to landslides in the area. BNSF Railway, which own the tracks, has placed a 48-hour moratorium, suspending all rail traffic in the area until Sat., Feb. 11. Alternate transportation will be provided for Amtrak Cascades service between Seattle and Everett. All Cascades service between Seattle and Portland is canceled, with no alternate transportation.

Empire Builder and Coast Starlight service is also impacted, with no alternate transportation at this time
