Just out of curiosity, are you still forced to auto-scrape virtual pages from rotating/random/obfuscated clients or has this information been added to a public data set with a legitimate API?
 
Nope, no API yet, still scraping. I've managed to avoid having to use rotating/random clients so far by using caching.

Actually 5 trains. On off Corridor services there is no real time location data (but sometimes the Ocean or N Quebec routes will), so I place the train at the prior station based on schedule and delay. So the two Skeenas are both shown at Prince George.

Keep in mind that the stretch between Winnipeg and Sudbury has very little population.
From the hours I spent mapping all the stations, I can say that station spacing is definitely inversely related to population density... seems counterintuitive, but all those flag stops are really close together.

Sometimes I had to plain guess, since there was zero sign of human development besides the railroad near some of the supposed locations, not even a clearing or hut.
 
My comment was really more about frequency than station density. If any of the western Canada trains were daily, there would be a lot more numbers on the map. Anyhow, that's probably more of a discussion for the VIA forum.

You'd have to go hold of "Cottage Life" magazine and figure out where all the cottages are! It's a beautiful part of the world up there.

If you were using the URL parameter method of focusing on a specific train, you will now have to add a new parameter "rr=A" or "rr=V" to specify which railroad.

Note that the OTP threshold for VIA trains is 10min in the corridor and 60 min outside. (some corridor trains get 15min in reality, but everything is 10 on my site for simplicity)

Just for completeness, Have you thought about adding the VIA rail line from The Pas to Pukatawagan? Then we have a complete map of the north american connected long distance rail passenger network! :)

Adding the line itself would be easy, but there's no way to get status information on those trains. Unless I keep them cycling just on the schedule....

Same holds for the Alaska RR, Kaoham Shuttle, Tshiuetin Rail, and Ontario Northlander.

That is a good idea regarding adding those lines and cycling the trains based on schedule only. Perhaps you could include a disclaimer that pops up when the train number is clicked on and it shows "this train is not tracked live and its location is based on schedule only" to tell people.
 
Just noticed an issue - VIA's feed only gives day of departure when there's more than one of a particular train on the move. So 2 is showing as today's even though it's yesterday's.

I'll have to come up with a solution...

EDIT: Issue addressed by hardcoding dates. Luckily there are only 10 train numbers that cross midnight...

Although the enhancement is for VIA trains, the tool predominantly supports Amtrak. In fact, one of the posts indicated that I would have to make changes to ASM so that the zoom feature would still work. I wouldn't have seen that in the VIA thread.
