A person was fatally hit by an Amtrak train in Hinsdale, Illinois this afternoon. This article says it was the eastbound Southwest Chief. This article doesn't say which train, but it does have some other details. Other trains in the area were also delayed including the other Chief and each California Zephyr. The Amtrak Location Map still shows #4(21) being held at Hinsdale.

We had to perform a E-brake just West of Raton when a person on the tracks acted like he wasn't going to move....Fun!!! Glad I was sitting.

;Based on the delay and disruption, it appears it was the California Zephyr that hit the pedestrian. It was delayed over an hour and half near Naperville. Southwest Chief did not experience a delay. My information is from the Amtrak Status Map.

I used to play basketball in a park near that crossing. I grew up 10 minutes from there.

When I attended middle school which was located in down town hinsdale which was located directly south of the station I was given a detention for refusing to trespass. A freight stopped on the middle track blocking the crossing. Several of my friends crawled underneath the freight and made it to school on time. I didn't knowing the freight could move at anytime. There was also the risk of an eastbound commuter train on the southern most track.

When I arrived to school ten minutes late none of the administrators believed me when I told them my reason for being late. My friends who crawled underneath the train and arrived on time were "used as evidence" to prove I had been playing on the way to school. This was one of the first times I realized just how stupid adults could be.

I believe it was the eastbound SWC that was involved. It was still sitting there when we passed it on the eastbound Zephyr. The westbound Zephyr and Chief passed us (or we passed them, however you want to look at us).

Wow, that's a great story! You were very smart as a child!

I wish I crossed some RR tracks on my way to school, so I could have a better excuse than "my chain fell off"' which has caused me to be late before

but no one will believe me at school

We were on this train when it happened. About 15 to 20 minutes from Chicago. I was in a bedroom, heard the engineer laying on the horn then the smell of brakes. We were told right away what had happened and that we could be there for several hours. Time depended on how long the investigation took and then the release by the coroner. We were there for 2 1/2 hours then on our way again. Before our final release they had the train move ahead about the length of the entire consist, then stop again for a few minutes. Guess they were checking to see if anything was under the train. We were not given any other details other than we had hit someone.
