I'm planning a trip from Denver to San Francisco next month with a friend and it will be the 1st time I'll be using my points. I've tried to search how to do this but as others have mentioned - it's not very clear.

My understanding is that there are no discounts given so you can only do it as an adult. I'm going to be paying for the trip and booking a roomette for us both ways. I'm not sure if I can use my points for her "coach seat" part. Can I just make the one booking or would I have to pay cash for her seat? If I have to do that - how will I be sure she is listed in the roomette?

I'm going to call and not do it online but I like to know what to expect so I'm prepared.

When I was checking my AGR page I saw listed from July 15th an AGR member Reactivation eCoupon 30 pct Discount 2016-2017 valid 8-5-16 - 10-8-16. I have no idea what this is about.

I printed it out and it says it's valid for 30 pct off the regular adult rail fare and it's valid for sleeper accommodation upgrades upon full payment of accommodation charges. It also says that it can't be used with any other discount or Amtrak Guest Rewards redemption travel. Does this mean it's only good if I'm paying and not using my points?

Thank you all for your help. I really enjoy reading what you all have to say.

When you book tell them two people in the room and they'll charge you the appropriate # of points and put your friends name on the reservation with yours.

I'm pretty sure that coupon is for cash purchases only.

You can see how many points will be required on the website. Just click the points button at the top of the listing of trains the give you. Make sure you put in 2 passengers first.

At least theoretically, inc ase you are short of points, you can book the room for one person using points, and then buy a cash ticket for the other person and add them on to the room. I have done this before, but there are better experts than me around here who can give details of the magic incantations that makes it possible.

Marylee, if you need to do this, then what you want is an Open Sleeper ticket, not a coach ticket. You would get the Open Sleeper at the lowest rail fare whereas the coach ticket could be much higher. Plus the coach ticket will not give your friend access to the sleeper.

Yeah, what I had done is added someone who had originally bought a Coach ticket and just had it converted to an open sleeper ticket to then add it to the Sleeper. It was for an adding an AU friend to my previously booked Sleeper accommodation for a day trip.
