I'm thinking of railfanning the NEC on Thanksgiving to catch the extras. Is it possible to catch them at a place like Larchmont, NY, or should I head down to North Philadelphia or some place around there?

Thanks,

TEB

I think you're going to catch more extra trains and more variety of equipment on them if you're in NJT territory.

On weekends yes. I believe it is the case on weekdays too but am not sure.
True also on weekdays. Even the express service Trenton to New York first stops at Hamilton and Princeton Junction before heading non-stop to Newark.

Yes--Princeton Junction is my commuter stop, and every NJT train stops there (as well as Hamilton)--I've done the commute on weekdays and weekends. (There usually is a huge crowd trying to get on as I get off! :) ) Also, Princeton Junction is a very pleasant station--small, safe as far as I know, and nobody will ask what you're doing if you just sit on a bench and watch trains go through. I've even seen people with tripods filming at the end of the platform, and nobody has said anything. It's much, much nicer than Trenton, and certainly much better than North Philadelphia. (The only robbery seems to be in the "convenience" store, where they charge Princeton prices!) The platform going south is less busy/crowded than the one going north, so that is where I would sit. The only problem might be parking--check first about where you can park just for a day and how to pay for it.

This is how I look at things as far where to railfan for such a period of time. On the Sunday after Turkey Day, Amtrak will borrow equipment from MARC and NJT. So taking pictures of Arrows in a place such as Trenton, Hamilton, or Princeton Junction would have much less meaning then here in the Philly area.. Same with the MARC sets. Their are many stations between Wilmington and Trenton that Septa serves that one can Railfan at Safely. But I have heard stories of rail fans being robbed of cameras and other things at North Philly.

Acela150--

Good points above--thanks :) .

As often happens, you provide an expert's knowledge and insight, while I am looking at things from more of a casual observer's or passenger's perspective, so perhaps they balance each other out :) .

The commuter extras are between NYP - WAS only, so I highly advise not going east of NYP to fan. You won't catch anything special in that regard. Your best bets on locations (depending on the type of action you want to catch), would be to choose between Elizabeth, Metropark, New Brunswick, Jersey Ave, or Princeton Junction (in NJ).

Thanks for the help guys. I do agree, extra Arrows at Princeton wouldn't really have much meaning. Is Levittown or some other place between philly and Trenton (other than North Philly) safe?

If you're planning you trip based upon seeing Arrows outside of their usual location....I wouldn't at this time.

That's not good...

lol about the Arrows :p

As for locations on the Trenton Line, Bristol is usually pretty popular due to the curves on either end of the station. Holmesburg is also nice due to the interlocking. Croydon is now high level, Levittown is good for visibility. Cornwells is decent, but I personally wouldn't pick that spot. Eddington, Tacony, and Bridesburg are shack stops, and I've never given much thought to Torresdale.

Tacony actually isn't that bad of a spot.
My bottom line is that the stop has to have restroom facilities :p
They have some near by bushes! :p
