Hello, I am new to the forum, I live in the UK and had a lifelong interest in railways and travelling on them, with my highlight being a journey in 2006 from the UK to China by train that included a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway. I am currently planning a trip on Amtraks Crescent in May 2016 as the first part of a `road trip` from New York to New Orleans, Miami, and Key West.

Welcome to AU! We have several members from the UK, more are always welcome!

Your UK-China trip sounds fascinating, did you dova blog or trip report? If so, lots of us would like to read it, care to share here or give us a link?

And New York, New Orleans, Miami and Key West are among the must see places in this country! Nice plan!

Indeed. Welcome to the forum. Having input from people who have traveled beyond Amtrak's network is always appreciated.

Yes please.

I can understand New York, New Orleans, and Miami. But Key West? Fighting all that traffic for hours and hours in both directions just to see a man made beach? I fail to comprehend the appeal. Maybe if you fly there it's not so bad?

Or drive in and out of there either very early in the morning or late in the evening. The traffic is not bad at all then.

If you are into rail archeology following the old Flagler railway down the Keys is interesting, and there is a nice little museum at the site of the original Key West station too. A ferry trip to the various uninhibited islands and to the Coral Reefs was also interesting at least for me. The only beach I have been to is the one in the Bahia Honda State Park, and it was pretty nice and peaceful, and great for some photography underwater of creatures and corals. So it all depends on what interests you.

Welcome, clivechesire!

As you can see already, we tend to discuss just about any post in detail, and you will find some fascinating stuff here! :)

Will you be in a sleeping car on the Crescent? If so, remember that your meals are included in the dining car. Whatever you do, do not have the cheesecake--it tastes like cardboard or medicine--couldn't quite decide which when I made the mistake of trying it. The chocolate dessert is very good. Even if they change the menu before you travel, anything chocolate is usually a good choice.

jis--You did mean "uninhabited" islands, not "uninhibited" ones, right? We don't want to give first-time visitors the impression that Florida is even wilder than it is! :p
