Is this heaven? No. It's Iowa.
How are the SAC station renovations going?

Is the ceiling of the waiting area still held up with a network of supports?

It looked like there was still lots to do when I was there in April.

I'm planning a trip that will require a 14 hour layover between the CS and the CZ in September '16.

Which direction are you taking the CS? The northbound CS gets into SAC sometimes on time at midnight. I don't believe they will let you sleep overnight in the station.

I would get off the CS in Martinez or maybe Davis to get in a hotel at a reasonable hour.

When coming from the north on the CS, I wait in the station until about 7AM and then go for breakfast. The eastbound CZ is in SAC about 11:15AM.

It will be good to see the restored mural again. We can always hope that the project gets done by the time you are passing through

I'm so glad the mural is back again. I remember staring at it and trying to figure out who all those people were and what they did after that picture was taken. (I was only 4-5 years old at the time, so didn't understand art all that well). We lived in Sacramento and would go to the station to take my dad to work and then pick him up 2 days later. He was a railway mail clerk.

I also remember playing on the steam locomotive that was displayed in front of the station where the parking lot is now. Kids were welcome to climb all over that thing and nobody freaked out about someone falling off and getting hurt.

I'll be glad when the renovation is complete. It is a beautiful station and was such a big part of my childhood. Have you ever noticed the heated wooden benches? So happy they survived the renovation.

If you go to the "related content" link at the Sac Bee article Charlie posted, there are some other photos. The best one has a square that is test cleaned, you can really see the difference there.

I believe they will.
Theoretically the station closes at 11:59 PM (same time as when #14 is scheduled to depart). However, I'd be surprised if they would shut it down and expect everyone to wait outside. I'm not sure how long they'd keep it open. It could get to the point where it's already opening time.

Amtrak info shows the station opening again at 4:00 am.

Plus I would be using the sleeper berth pax waiting area that has the padded chairs, a love seat, and a couch.

When I was there in April the CS was a couple of hours late and no one waiting in the station for other trains was made to leave the station.
