I'm sitting on #5 in SLC right now (I have a wifi hotspot I'm working with) and when we pulled in I noticed three sleeping cars and a locomotive sitting in the SLC station. Does anyone know what they're doing here? It has me particularly confused because SLC doesn't originate or terminate any Amtrak trains nor handle any maintenance of note here.

Can you describe the cars in further detail? Amtrak or private and if Amtrak Superliner or Heritage stock.

They are Superliners and they are in SLC for a training excercise.
What Thirdrail said. I'd like to think I would have noted if they were anything odd for that part of the world but clearly not commuter equipment...but fair point on that front. Still, good call on asking.
