Hi, I've been riding Amtrak trains for many years and I'm an avid railfan.

I ran across this forum in some search results today and decided to join right away. I live in California and most often take Capital Corridor trains. I also use the western long distance trains, generally at least once a year, to visit family in the midwest. I'm looking forward to all the great discussions here!

Welcome to AU Bob! I'm guessing your name is from the old Southern Pacific Lines?

I like California,my brother lives in Sonoma and I visit each August via Train. W ish I could afford to live there! LOL

My Grandfather was a 40 year Railroader on the SP and I took my first train ride @ 3 months old with my mom on the Sunset Ltd.

Looking forward to your comments and sharing your knowledge and expierences with us!

Thanks guys!

Yes the SP is/was my favorite railroad. Such a complex and colorful operation.

It's great to find this site---I know I'll be learning a lot and hopefully have something to offer others as well. My next vacation involves traveling to Chicago from the bay area. I'm taking #6 to get there and #3/14 to get back. I have done that configuration before and it works out well. I live in downtown Oakland and can walk to the Jack London Square station.

Jim, I wish I could afford to live in Sonoma too! I do enjoy wine and that whole area is wine paradise. SP had a Sonoma branch that went out of service in the 30s I believe. The "Traintown" museum in Sonoma includes the old Sonoma SP depot.

Thanks Bob, living within walking distance of Jack London Square isn't too shabby either!

Your trip is a good one, can't beat the Zephyr, Chief and Starlight!

And I've seen the Museum and the Rail Station in Sonoma. I like that little City even if it is too rich for me! The only area town I like more is Davis, right up the tracks so to speak!
