My son is traveling alone (age 17) enroute to Chicago. I purchased a one way ticket on train 8. Does the train stop here for very long? How will he know which car to get on as there is also train 28? Thanks for the advice.

The train will probably only stop there for a minute or two. The train crew will direct him where to board. Train 28 is part of the same train. 28 refers to the section that originates in Portland; most of the cars come from Seattle. Keep track of the train's status by using the Amtrak app or calling the Amtrak phone number and asking for Train Status for Train 8

I trust that you are aware that Train 8 tends to be very late.
I just read about it on this site. :( I registered for him to receive an alert two hours prior, not sure if that means two hours prior to the scheduled time or two hours prior to the revised ETA. Any thoughts?

I believe the alert should be issued at least two hours prior to the scheduled departure, not the delayed departure time. However, please be proactive and keep on top of these matters. My father used to have a saying: D.A.N. That means " Don't Assume Nuthin'!" I hope your son enjoys the trip.

The alerts come two hours prior to scheduled departure. The train does not stop there for very long, but it'll be the only east bound train (train 8 and 28 are connected into one long train east of Washington state, so they'll be together all the way from Wisconsin Dells to Chicago.) If he's on the platform when the train arrives, the conductors or attendants will make sure that he gets on the train at the right place. :)

Just a followup. Everything worked out great. He got the text alert as promised. Even better, I followed the train status on the internet and was able to alert the family he was staying with (who had no internet at their cabin) that there was no need to rush in to the Dells with a 3 1/2 hour delay.
