Will I have any problem booking a pair of roomettes, paying for one while using points for the second, when I've got an adult, a 13yo, and a 10yo? Ideally, the roomettes would be near each other, though I'm concerned that that might be difficult because we want to travel in, like, five or six days. I'll give a call to AGR to find out when I can, but I am not in a good place for making this call right now- was wondering if anyone already has experience with doing this.

I think you are suppose to have an adult in each room. Not sure if they will let you book a room with only a child.

I would get the purchased room first since it is easier for AGR to get the room across the hall. Though when buying, you might mention you need a room with an open room across the hall.

You can do both the purchase and the redemption through AGR on the same call. They may be understanding if accommodations are indeed available across the hall from each other. If they don't have such an arrangement available, they may try to steer you towards a bedroom where all can travel together (I understand the reasoning behind wanting to do two roomettes -- it probably lowers your out-of-pocket cost).

Let us know what they say.

I have almost exactly 15,000 points- I can't get a bedroom (or family bedroom), and I've already purchased 10,000 points this calendar year on my account. Though, I could buy 10,000 points on a kid's account and transfer it, for a total of $375, which is (only) about $30 more than a roomette for one on the date I'm looking at (and cheaper than almost any other nearby date) and then we could get a family bedroom.

On the other hand, if I were *buying* tickets, I could book the three of us in two roomettes without any problem at all (since age 13 pays adult prices, the system happily offers two roomettes for the configuration... 2 adults, 1 child-ages-2-12).

I'm going to contemplate for a little while, and perhaps call AGR for a chat (tomorrow, too late now).

Useless update because I didn't ask if I could have done it the first way... my kids both strongly voted for getting the family bedroom (neither wanted to sleep in a space without me in the same space) (also, they incorrectly prefer the view from the lower level) so I went with that (by buying points in one of their accounts and transferring them to mine). At least I was able to pick a better day than I was looking at for the low-bucket roomette.

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out. I hope the kids enjoy the trip! I'm sure they will get to see the views from both levels, as you will be spending some time in the Sightseer Lounge car.

For those of you who have already purchased your 10K limit for the year, It may be time to buy a pair of shoes/boots etc. from Shoebuy. At 10 points/dollar, you have a much better selection than other places I'm familiar with. I just got a summer job (fire lookout) so I needed a new pair of boots. I bought a pair a little more expensive than I would have just because of the extra points and I'll have a little more income.
