So, either tonight/tomorrow or next weekend I am taking a train from Toledo to Sandusky and back, From around 12 AM pick up on the Capitol Limited, getting there at 12:40, then coming back on the westbound Lake Shore limited around 5 AM. All for the sake that I want to ride a train. I've only ridden the Capitol Limited to Chicago, then the Empire Builder to Seattle. I love trains but I wish more trains would come out of Toledo, which from what I hear get the most revenue than any other Amtrak station in Ohio. Round Trip costing around 25 Dollars. What's the shortest trip you've been on an Amtrak Train?

WIL-NRK I guess it's possible if you time it right as very few NER's stop at NRK.

Charleston, SC to Yemassee and back. Silver Meteor SB and Palmetto NB. I knew someone who did that trip regularly.

Berkeley to Emeryville ( 2 miles) and 2nd place; Emeryville to Oakland Jack London Square ( 5 miles) 3rd place: Berkeley to Richmond! ( 6 miles) 4th would be Washington DC to New Carrolton, MD ( 9 miles) and 5th is Kansas City to Independence, Mo. ( 10 miles)

In Boston its actually only 1 mile between South Station and Backbay, but I haven't ridden between the two Stations RT!

Cheapest points run used to be St. Louis to Alton,IL. but that's 33 miles!

During Double promotion days I ride from Elizabethtown to Lancaster or Harrisburg round trip the same day, sometimes in the same hour to accumulate points. It's about fifteen minutes and with a R/T fare of $11.04, and 450 points during double days(I get 25 points extra each way being a Select member), it's a better value than buying points...except when they have a 50% bonus offer.

Winter Park to Orlando and back. 5 miles each way on Silver Meteor 97 and 98.

I actually took 22 from Ft worth to Dallas and returned on 21 back to Ft worth next trip. Took two young grand kids for a train ride.

Speaking in AmtrakUnlimitedese, my shortest trip was from one end of the alphabet to the other.

WAS-ALX (7 miles or so?), connecting from another train or just avoiding the DC metro on a given day.

In February I booked ALX-FBG-ALX on the Carolinian, which would normally give me about 3 hours in FBG. But 80 was highly delayed (freight derailment in NC) and I ended up spending about 6-7 hours in town, which was nice until I got back to the unheated platform.

ALX-WAS back to ALX. Just for the fun of it, on the Regional

Anyone want to get me tickets for it tonight? I wish I had money to do it tonight - I totally would tonight. 30 at 11:49 in TOL, then back on the 48 at 4:55 in SKY.

Syracuse - Utica and back! :) I was visiting the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, so the full trip was a tad longer.
I forgot about the Adirondack--that's a really good idea!

My shortest trip is ROC to SYR and back again, all in about four hours. I took our 2-year-old on a quick trip because we both like riding the train, and we spent a few hours at the Regional Market. That was back in the fall, and the place was full of apples and pumpkins.

I'm a bit jealous of some of those prices you guys mention ($12???)! I think this was about $60 round trip.

CHI - GLN. Depart at 8:25 AM on the Hiawatha. Arrive 8:47. $9.50.

GLN - CHI. Depart at 9:06 AM on the Hiawatha. Arrive 9:44, $9.50.

Do it all in 1 hour, 15 minutes for $19.00 - 200 points.

Catch the 10:20 Hiawatha and arrive at 10:42 for another $9.50.

You'll have a 1:20 layover for the 12:01 return to CHI. $9.50.

400 points in 4 hours and $38.

Maybe I'll wait for Double Days this fall.

BOS-BBY, or BOS-RTE. I guess that's not really fair to count, as I was "trapped" on-board as protect for various reasons, and didn't have a choice but to go and come back to South Station.

You cannot book BOS-BBY or BOS- RTE.

Yup. Which is why I said it's not fair to count it. :p I work for Amtrak and have had to ride between BOS-BBY/RTE to help trains get set up after late arrival of stock, or last minute consist swaps, resulting in help getting the Cafe or Club Car set up.

My wife and I did FNO-HNF simply to visit the fantastic Superior Dairy for some ice cream.

Trip takes 34 minutes each way and we spent about 2.5 hours in Hanford before returning back to Fresno.

Totally worth the trip... the ice cream is phenomenal.

You can also so CHI-JOL which cost only $6.50 one way.

CHI-SMT would have beat the price at $3 one way but no route exist for the return leg.
