Supposing I got off the westbound California Zephyr in Elko, Nevada, at the carded 3:03 a.m. Is there a 24-hour restaurant within walking distance where I could go to hole up until the town woke up? A nearby hotel? There is no station, just a couple of glassed-in enclosures. Any ideas?

On one of the CZ detours through the Feather River Canyon in California, several people turned in Elko, walking to a 24-hour restaurant, I think it was Dennys. Looking at google maps, Dennys is up by the interstate, about 3 miles from Amtrak. There are a number of closer restaurants downtown but I didn't look at hours. Casinos are ordinarily open all night, though, you won't be the only one up. There are some real old ones in Elko that are fun to look at even if you don't gamble. I'd say have at it!

A few years ago my fuel pump went out when I was at the top of the ridge line looking down at Elko in the valley. I coasted down the hill and rolled my car to a repair shop a couple of blocks off of the main street thru town. To kill some time while the car was being repaired, my wife and I walked across the street to what appeared to be a bar and grill. Soon after sitting down and ordering a coke, it became apparent they were 'selling' more than sandwiches and beverages in this establishment (a legal activity in the rural counties of Nevada)!

When I got back to the repair shop I was talking about the joint across the street and the mechanics told me the city rules (in those days, at least) were that those establishments were allowed but not on the main drag. So, unless you are interested in 'sporting ladies' stick to the coffee shops and casinos on main street !!!

I'd advice against riding the CZ to Elko. I live in Reno and I've been to Elko a few times, don't think there's much reason to visit. If you have to go there, take the bus from SLC which departs at 11:35 AM and gets there at 2:45 PM (it's the 1345 SLC-RNO). Fortunately, that route hasn't got much torture machines, unlike west of Reno.

Winnemucca is a crew change point for the entire crew. I observed this one evening a few yeArs ago when staying in a motel in town on the way to Alaska. This is a short haul with one engineer from Reno. 2 engineers from Winnemucca to Salt Lake City.
