I had planned on taking this trip last summer but I wound up having a stroke on Mother's Day and had to cancel - I'll be going round trip from Flint to Memphis which of course means a layover in Chicago.

Couple of questions:

1. Can I check my bag for Memphis as soon as I arrive in Chicago?

2. The train arrives in Memphis REALLY early in the morning, can I pick up my bag after I get some breakfast?

3. How early can I check my bag in Memphis for the return trip since the train leaves pretty late and hotel checkout is 11am?

1. Yes

2. Yes, Amtrak allows 48 hours to claim checked luggage

3. 24 hours prior to departure.

Congrats. But the real question is, are you going to Graceland?
No,I know it's sacreligious to go to Memphis and not see Graceland but there are other things I'd rather see.
Such as the Peabody ducks?
Definitely, along with the Civil Rights museum, the Rock & Soul museum and Slave Haven - not to mention I'm looking forward to some truly excellent food (restaurant recommendations are greatly appreciated).

When you visit National Civil Rights Museum - make sure to stop by and see Jacqueline Smith on corner across from Lorraine Motel sign.

Even Monks visit home of Elvis - I have proof of that.

Skipping Sun Studio? You'll miss their Segway and Minifon model P55 S spy watch! And of course music history - that continues to me made there today.

I haven't made an appearance at Amtrak Memphis station in 13 months - overdue for a visit.

If you have a sweet tooth, Central Barbecue (behind the Civil Rights Museum) has the best banana pudding I have ever tasted -- I think they lighten it with whipped cream, because it has a fluffier texture than most banana puddings I have had. The barbecue is well-smoked, also, although not as heavily seasoned as Rendezvous.

We enjoyed the Stax museum quite a bit, although it is a bit out of the way.
