The 2015 Amtrak Exhibit Train Schedule is posted. Stops include: Toledo, OH; Chicago, IL; Sacramento, CA; Dunsmuir, CA; Galeburg, IL; Grand Rapids, MI; Syracuse, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Denver, CO; Grand Junction, CO; & Florence, SC. Details at the Amtrak Exhibit Train page on Amtrak dot com.

They also encourage cities to create their own Train Day and list locations where this is happening. I think this is a better idea, since if done properly, it will increase the number of exposures for Amtrak....although I am sure there will be complaints that it is different than previous years.

Finally a Denver stop. Granted the station was just redone so why not :)

I will be in Chicago on a layover at Union Station on that particular day. How convenient.

Harrumph!

No Texas stops? I guess we don't generate enough revenue traffic here....

NYP doesn't have the space.
Not implying that it does, simply saying that revenue generated by a station isn't necessarily a factor as to whether or not the exhibit train stops there. Take Dunsmuir as an example of that, according to Wiki, the 66th busiest station in California in FY2012.

These Train Days seem dependent on local sponsors. If somebody in Texas wants the exhibit train, organize a Train Day event.

A Train Day even doesn't really need a sponsor. A table set up with Amtrak timetables, Brochures, Amtrak Vacatins brochures or any Amtrak material to give to people boarding the train can cause some buzz. Call your local newspaper to come take a picture. If your station is manned, see if a reporter will interview the employee for comments. If you have a Rail Fan group, get their participation. See if a government official is a supporter of passenger rail and get them involved. This isn't rocket science! I am sure Amtrak can give you some guidance and assistance with promotional material. It is all well and good for rail fans to say they support passenger rail, but this is a chance to really do something.....however small it may be!

Isn't that what I said? A person or group of persons organizing such an event would be a local "sponsor." I didn't mean it to be a commercial backer. A group of volunteers can be a sponsor.

Good news for our Toledo NTD celebrations. The Toledo group seems to be very well organized and has had many interesting displays, always a week before the former NTD celebrations took place. A nice selection of local NS W&LE and other cars around and great model railroad shows and even a railfan get together on Friday night before. If you live close by or just want to ride the CL or LSL to town, you will have a good time in TOL. :)

And if you are in to art. Also one of the great art museum collections in the country.

Railroad Bill,

I am interested in attending the Toledo Amtrak Exhibit Train event. Are you able to supply any other details about other events taking place around the Exhibit Train? Or supply a link for such information? Does one need to obtain a ticket/reservation in advance to visit the train?

What is the parking situation at the Toledo station where the Exhibit Train will be?

Thanks for your information and help.

They have a Facebook page that has some information about NTD 2015 Toledo. Also the Toledo tourism page listed below will give you details as well. Starts at 9 but be there earlier to get a good parking spot.

http://www.tmacog.org/National_Train_Day_Toledo.htm

There is free parking at a local business lot next door to the station and on the street. Get there early on Saturday to park close. The exhibits have always been free admission in the past. The Friday night program is around $25 for reception, program etc. Station is nice and has all kinds of displays. Should be locomotives from NS Heritage engines and W&LE heritage locos along with speeder rides and other freight car displays.

I traveled five hours to go to Toledo last year and enjoyed every minute of it. A throng of warm bodies, great displays, about five engines,,, an Amtrak Superliner consist of a sleeper, diner, and wonderful people.

Parking was not so hot, luckily I found a handicap spot eventually, but a small smudge on an otherwise glorious day

Every time this topic comes up, everyone asks why no NYP.. Think about it..
For clarity, nobody (including myself) asked "why no NYP" - here's the exact sequence of posts:

By that same theory, apparently NYP doesn't either!

It appears that National Train Day as we know it may be gone. It looks like the closest location for NE and Mid Atlantic rail fans to see the Amtrak exhibit train will be Sat. Sept 19 at Philadelphia's 30th street station. I have no idea if Amtrak has anything planned beyond the exhibit train but hope that that some of the past NTD activities and events are still retained. NTD was a fun event and it was enjoyable attending it.

As for the Amtrak Exhibit train at NYP, it is very unlikely to ever stop there. A small underground station having to deal with six NJT commuter trains , Amtrak NEC, Cardinal, Lake Shore, Silvers and Crescent with two track tunnels leading into NYC isn't conducive to an event there. A train leaves or arrives at that station every 5 minutes and the place is always packed. Thank the people that put the wrecking ball to the original, large and beautiful Pennsylvania station that once stood there for a prime reason that an Amtrak exhibit train wont be there. .
