2 adults traveling with a 7 year old and 6 mos old from Denver to Emeryville on the California Zephyr. Recommend 2 roomettes or a family bedroom?

I went solo in the family bedroom (everything else was sold out) and really liked it, more room than the roomette, and the kids berths are a good size for your kids. The family room will allow more room to play, without being in the hallways. I would suggest the family room, it's on the lower level, at the end of the car, so was quiet and out of the way.

If you can get the Family Room @ a comparable price to 2 Roomettes it as, as was said, really ideal for your family!

Depending on the fullness of the Sleepers, the F Room Can be Very Pricey

( called High Bucket) and 2 Roomettes may be quite a bit cheaper!

If you do book 2 Roomettes be sure and ask for them to be across from each other!( #3 and #4 for example)

Your other option is a Regular Bedroom which will accommodate 2 adults and 2 small children, but can be even pricier than the Family Room or 2 Roomettes!

Edited to post correct #s! Thanks Betty!

Jim, #4 and #5 are not across from each other.

It's 1-2 (1 being the SCA's room), 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10 upstairs. 11-12, 13-14 downstairs.

I'd vote for two roomettes if price is similar. Windows are bigger as are the bunks. Can put adults on bottom, kids on top; during day naptimes they can occupy one room while adults are in the other. We've done it both ways, the main drawback with the family room is the two "kid bunks" are smaller than normal, and I seem to recall the window on one side is smaller than the other. Then again, the Family room does have the advantage of being near the restrooms and and showers, but if you request a lower level roomette you get that too.

With cost not being a consideration I would opt for two roomettes across the hall from each other. It allows for more flexibility of occupancy and the adults to have lower berths. I've done both and neither is bad so go with what costs you less, you will be happy either way.

My suggestion is to go with the Family room. Simply because there is a "child bed" and long bed on the lower bunk level. So should your 6 month old need some attention in the night you can quickly be there. Compared to a roomette where one would have to either sleep with the little one which I don't suggest or climb down from the top bunk.

My thought with the roomettes option was that one of us could sleep with the baby and we would have an extra bunk to store some stuff out of the way (if they allow that...). My concern with the family bedroom was the windows. They look quite a bit smaller.

I've booked Family room both with family, alone, and with business associate. I like the fact that you can see out BOTH sides of the train car, from one room. It's quieter too, at the end of the hall. ONLY drawback is no in-room bathroom, and it's on the lower level.

IMHO, the "view" is better from the upper level.

You can't go wrong either way, try the Family bedroom while the kids are still very young, as once they reach teenage years, those kid beds are WAY to small.

A roomette berth is really too small for an adult to sleep safely with a baby. I would highly recommend the family bedroom if the price is at all comparable.

It really does depend. I once got the F for two people on the Eagle for $80 more than a roomette. The main advantage of the F is the space in one place. You might have two roomettes, but they are two cramped roomettes, with nary a place to stand up.
