A question for those who've viewed the scenery aboard the SWC...is Mt. Baldy, the second-tallest mountain in New Mexico, visible from the SWC?

Reason I ask is that I climbed it many years ago, when I was at Philmont Scout Ranch. (Unfortunately, back then, a trip to Philmont by rail was out of the question for our Syracuse/Central NY-based expedition, as Amtrak didn't operate between west of Buffalo.)

Quick answer: No. The Raton Pass rail line is too far east. You can't even see Baldy from Philmont Base Camp.

Yes you can, but it is not the second highest peak in New Mexico. Highest is Wheeler Peak, second highest is Truchas Peak. Both of these are also visible from the SWC.

Philmont is closer to the mountains, so parts of them are hidden by the rather rugged foothills (those that make the Cimarron and Mora River canyons). The Glorieta Subdivision is farther out, so more of the higher peaks--indeed all of them--can be seen.

Baldy Mountain is actually the 8th highest peak in New Mexico.

It's actually called Baldy Mountain, but many refer to it as "Mount Baldy". It's in Colfax County, NM, near-ish Cimarron.
