Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the kind words received about my travel reports. It was nice to meet up with some old and new faces at the "gathering", and sharing a room with Jim worked out well for me... Thanks foragain Jim!

I left EMY Monday morning, on the Coast Starlight south bound for San Luis Obispo... in search of more sunshine and cheap accommodation!

I found both, and have been here since... I was undecided how to continue my trip, but a lack of onward hostel availability on required dates made me decide to stay put, and I am glad I did.

I have met some great people here, and even shared a car drive up highway 1 to Monterey.

I am just chilling here now for a few more days, then a ride back to Chicago on the Zephyr (roomette... hurrah!), and on to NYP (coach) on the Lakeshore. I fly home after only 24 hours in New York but having visited before, I don’t mind missing out on NYC this time.

I will sign off for now, but hope to do a final report on the Zephyr/Lakeshore trip after I get home.

Are you staying in the hostel near the station, CVM? I stayed there for a week a few years ago; I liked it. I was checking out SLO as a place to retire. Housing was much cheaper then. I enjoyed taking the local bus down to Pismo Beach and to Los Osos.

I met a gent who said SLO was a very expensive place these days, He retired here but is only renting. Aged 80 he felt it was his best option...

The Hostel is very near the station, a "Hostels International" group place.

Likewise, I seem to spend most days on the bus to the beaches. I like browsing in the thrift shops, and Pheonix Books is a good recomendation from AU member Alice. Just relaxing and enjoying the sunshine.

Again, great pictures! I recognize one :) Glad you are enjoying SLO and environs. Enjoy the roomette! Love them!

Hello Ed

Enjoyed your trip reports and interested in particular in this one about SLO. We are there next March but for just a half day, got any recommendations where to eat in the evening near to the station or downtown?

As mentioned previously we are due in Nottingham for a day but are running about 2 weeks late so think it's now during the start of the second week of November, will you be back by then as would love to hear first hand about some of your travels.

Hi,

Downtown SLO is quite compact, and within easy walking distance from the station. No recommendations, but a student town lots of choice. If you happen to be here on a Thursday evening they have a farmers market, which has lots of local hot food stalls too!

(I have mostly eaten in the hostel, they have a kitchen, so I just buy and cook food here)

I expect to be home on the 29th Oct, so I will PM you soon after to see if we can meet up.

cheers

I used to live in SLO during my college years. It has excellent public transportation to visit those coastal areas, including famous Hearst Castle. Few years ago, I did stayed at hostel which you've described. It's very homey.
