Amtrak will allow my wife and I each 2 carry-on suitcases (plus hand bags/totes). Is there sufficient space in the bedroom of a Superliner to accommodate 4 suitcases---or will some of the bags have to go into the luggage room? We will be on the TE, CL and SM, with bedrooms on each leg.

The "luggage room" is just a rack on the bottom floor of the car - across from the stairs. I have no problem leaving my bags there and taking just a small bag with my change of clothes, etc to my roomette upstairs. You will have access to your bags on the rack.

If you meant the baggage car, then you will not have access to the bags until your destination.

Check out this in the First Time Rider forum. It will give you an good idea of how the trains look inside: http://discuss.amtraktrains.com/index.php?/forum/40-car-layouts-virtual-tours/

We try to bring one bag to the sleeper plus the medicine chest (long story, cancer will do that to you) into the sleeper and check the rest. .

I actually have a packing regiment splitting the trip into sections,,, and one of those is the "train bag."

For this old man, checking bags is a lot easier than toting them.

There is a lot of room in a Viewliner Bedroom. Enough for a two large luggage pieces, a cooler, a laptop and an overnight bag or two. The Superliner bedrooms have less room. The ceiling is lower and the space over the bathroom that you have on the Viewliners is just not there.

I would not recommend taking large luggage into a Superliner bedroom or a roomette. As Amtrakblue has said the luggage rack on the lower level can accommodate the big pieces. If your station of departure and arrival offers baggage service I encourage you to use it and check your luggage. Then you can take a large overnight bag (per person) to the bedroom for the entire trip. On our many train trips, we take the large overnight bag, a laptop, and a small cooler with us. The overnight bags gave us enough clothing (for the two additional days of the trip), sleepwear, personal items, magazines DVD's and medicinal items. At best your bedroom will have a 6" wide closet, a baggage shelf and some room on the floor, not much more.

Well said. That is indeed the best way to approach things. A smaller bag for your needs in the BR and the rest can stay in the luggage area in the lower level of the car. We do this when my wife accompanies me on trips. Works fine!

Superliner Bedrooms have pretty good luggage storage, as opposed to the Roomettes. In a Bedroom you have an overhead rack which will hold a fairly large suitcase, you can tuck an airline carry-on size bag under the seat opposite the sofa, and you can slide two medium-sized bags under the sofa-berth. The Roomettes are much tighter...I have put a gym bag under the seats, and you can put a medium-size suitcase on top of the steps for the upper berth, but aside from that basically everything needs to ride in the luggage rack downstairs or else in the baggage car as checked baggage.

My wife and I have made two 5,000 mile trips in the last two years. We check our large suitcases at our boarding station, then pick them up at our final destination. In our Roomette, my wife carries a small travel bag with her needs for a 2 1/2 day trip and I carry a backpack with what in need, I also carry a power strip with me, for phones, iPads my Cpap and anything else that needs plugged in, the room only has one plug!

Also, if you are getting a room with a toilet, sink and shower, you might want to use the shower on the lower level, you can stand up to take a shower, verses sitting on your toilet taking a shower! A good time to take a stand up shower is when They start to slow down and stop for a extended time, hit the shower, hopefully you take fast showers, LOL!

Hope some of the information posted on here helps you have a trip of a lifetime!

Oh, if you have a smart phone, you might want to download these two apps: CarHome Ultra and Google Maps. CarHome Ultra is a free app for a month, then you will be asked to purchase it, cost after 30 time period, $ 3.99, well worth it. With it you can tell how fast the train is going, where you are at and the Time and Temperature. You can also add other apps to this one location. Google maps lets you follow along the train route on a map, pretty cool. I use this app almost everyday and this one is free!

Have Fun, wish I was going with you, but just got back from Alaska and rode Amtrak almost all the way, we even caught Amtrak out of Vancover, BC on our return trip home!

Also there are good videos on youtube that provide tours of sleeping accommodations available on Amtrak. Check those out, I found them very helpful.

It gets tight in the Superliner Bedrooms with luggage. The overhead one can store one of those rollers easily but if your looking to put 4 big samsonites in there. Your not going to be very comfortable. When the lower bed is in sleep mode, there is very little room left so I would not advise for your own comfort. Here are my pictures from the SL bedroom. https://www.flickr.com/photos/115569327@N08/sets/72157640159976306/

Pretty much with four suit cases, you will not be opening the bathroom, or the arm chair and the table will be useless.

But only if the room is not occupied by people!

One airline carry-on sized suitcase plus a small personal bag or two is all that comfortably fits unless you enjoy moving bags from place to place constantly.

seat38a,

Thanks for some great photos! I must ask: in a few, a see what appears to be full bottles of wine. Did you bring those on board yourself or did you buy those in the Lounge Car?

Brought all my own booze. One of the benefits of being in the sleeper is being able to consume your own booze. Our waitress Alice Wong, let us bring the wine to dinner.
