My wife and I are taking the SW Chief from Raton, NM to LA and then connecting on the Pacific Surfliner to San Diego next Wednesday.. There's about an 1 1/2 hours between the scheduled arrival of #3 and departure of #768. WeI've ridden Amtrak enough and have been looking at recent delays on the Chief to know an "on time "arrival is rare.

What is the procedure if we miss that connection? Will they hold up the Surfliner a bit if there are enough connecting passengers? Or do they just put us on the next scheduled Surfliner? We are traveling in a roomette on #3 and business on the Surfliner.

Thanks in advance for the information.

Since there are several Surfliners every day, they will probably just put you on the next Surfliner. The Surfliners generally run right on schedule so they probably will not hold one more than a few minutes.

For a connection like the Surfliner they won't hold it. If you were in coach on the Surfliner since it's unreserved you would just board the next one, no change in tickets required. Since your in business you will need to exchange your tickets (which will be done free of charge since you missed your connection) to the next Surfliner.

Also both trains stop in Fullerton, the SW Chief is due to arrive at 6:34am, the connecting Surfliner your booked onto stops at 10:19am.

Amtrak wants you to change in L.A. even though your backtracking for a half-hour before you join the Surfliner route.

I was actually on a SWC trip which arrived in LA early enough for transferring passengers to connect with the soon to depart Surfliner PREVIOUS to the train for which they were scheduled.
