If there is just two of us, can we get the Family Bedroom or do they save that room for more people?

I put in multiple dates on a Friday trying to get the Family Bedroom for 4 of us and it always says sold out? If I put in only 2 people on those very same dates, it says it's available? How does THAT work? It's either available or it's not! How can I get a Family Bedroom for the four of us?

Are you putting in two adults and two kids? If you have three adults and one kid, it won't give it to you online.

Are you putting 4 adults? If so, then it's not available. Two of the beds are child size.

Back to the serious side: The lower berth in a Family Bedroom is wide enough for two adults to share (if they're accustomed to togetherness...it's just slightly wider than a standard twin bed) and, to my understanding, Amtrak will allow you to book three adults (plus two under 5 foot kids) in the Family Bedroom...but you have to call and speak to an agent.
