Sorry for the delay in posting this here (some of you have seen it elsewhere). As of a week ago today, Anderson (Cliff) and I have been elected to the NARP Council of Representatives. This is a 100-member body that includes state representatives and a few at-large members. Our job is to encourage the states, Congress and Amtrak to improve passenger rail services.

Our first acts were to vote for NARP's Board, and to spend Tuesday on Capitol Hill asking our representatives to support the transportation plan that includes $19B over 5 years for passenger rail.

It won't be easy in the current political climate. But I think NARP is finally moving into the 21st century.

So please, tell your elected representatives to support passenger rail, and communicate with us if you have any constructive ideas on how to make the system better. We don't have any magic wands, but maybe we can pass them on to the appropriate people.

OK. I think you know everything which has ever been written on this forum :) and I doubt there are any ideas I can give you at this point which you haven't already said yourself! Maybe later.
At this point I'd just like to push Amtrak to finish some of its half-finished projects (everything in the PIPs, relocating the Chicago Metropolitan Lounge, point-of-sale accounting in the diners), and fix the damn website room pricing bug.

Even just some status updates on those projects would be appreciated at this point. Sigh.
 
Charlie, if there is no daytime service any time soon between Seattle and Spokane via Stampede Pass, I will hold you personally responsible. ;) :lol:
Heh... That's the downside of being visibly involved in rail advocacy. Every failure of the creaky setup becomes your own personal responsibility :p

Congratulations Charlie and Cliff. I did write my two US Senators asking them to support passenger rail service. Got a form letter from Rob Portman ® saying the "budget had many constraints". Blah, blah, blah..

Received a personal email from Senator Sherrod Brown (D) saying he was disappointed in both our national and Ohio governments for not supporting high speed rail on the 3-C corridor and across the northern tier.. Cleveland to Chicago. The money turned down by Gov. Kasich would have meant jobs and economic development for our state that is greatly needed. He and I have been casual friends since he was Secretary of State in Ohio and he is the one shining light in Ohio's representation in DC.
 
At least Ohio has One Decent Senator Bill! Most of us are stuck with Nixon/McCarthy types or else out and Crooks or Brain Dead Party Hacks who are Puppets dancing on the Billionaires strings!Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison,Republicanof Texas/Retired was a great and good friend of Amtrak and Passenger Rail, she is missed!

It would be useful for NARP to bug Amtrak about the PIP reports and which of the recommendations they are still planning to implement. And when. For that matter, maybe NARP should suggest to Amtrak that it consider updating the reports with a Version 2, say 5 years after the initial release of each one, to incorporate the status of current and new improvement projects and the overall company planning. The LD divisionand corporate strategy staff should show some initiative by generating new public PIP reports without being forced to do so by Congress.
