I suppose in the jargon of forum lingo, I am a "newbie." For whatever the reason, that term along with "foamer" has always wrankled me a bit. Anyway, so be it - I am a "newbie" at nearly 76 years of age. Wow.

The point of all of this is to introduce myself with the hope that my appearances on these various forums will be more frequent than not and of worth to all who appreciate accounts of rail travel and from time to time, some model railroading thrown in.

My background includes a 32 year career in the U.S. Coast Guard holding the paygrades of E7, W2 and 05. One may wonder how trains fits into such a background.

I grew up in NYCity and was inculcated into the love and lore of trains by my maternal Grandfather. We prowled the depths of Penn Station and Grand Central back in the 1940's. Yeah, those indeed were the days for passenger train watching - drooling may be a better term.

Rather than fill up my alloted space with more of "me," let me simply say that once I retired from my life as a seagoing and landlubber sailor, I devoted my free time to model railroading and traveling by train. Within the past 3 years, I have traveled all of Amtrak's long distance routes (in bedrooms) and am now engaged in repeating many of those trips. I love the westbound California Zephyr! My travel times permit me to head off to Sacramento from Chicago on a twice a year basis for visits to the California State RR Museum, where I hold membership.

With relatives in Canada, VIA Rail was and has been a favorite of mine as well. I am indeed thankful that all of those long distance rotues have been covered as well, especially in light of the Draconian cuts being proposed by Ottawa. My wife and I have logged 4 cross-Canada trips aboard the Canadian along with numerous Montreal to Halifax round trip journeys aboard the Ocean - now a nameless train about to be discontinued. Anyway . . .

So, that is it for me as I look forward to future participation with y'all.

:hi: Welcome to AU and thanks for your service! Since this years AU Gathering is in the San Francisco Bay Area, ya'll can ride the Zephyr West and meet us and ride a few Trains and make some new friends! ;)

G'day!

A quick thanx to Jim, Bill, The Traveler and Misty for the welcome; most appreciated.

Once I figure out where I should "roost" regarding submissions, I will do the best I can to be a contributor.

Jim: As for the get together in SFran this October, sounds like a winner. For me, I plan to be in Sacramento in late October. I could move up that date if a day in Sacramento is to be included within the AU agenda. I just gotta go back to the CSRM! It is like a magnet or Siren's Song.

The Traveler: WWII stll holds vivid memories for me as a kid where we had Victory Gardens, my mom worked in a munitions plant at night, my dad was gone for the 4 years of it all as a Merchie sailing the north Atlantic. Lots of stories there. We used to say that the Coast Guard was that small nucleus around which the Navy forms in time of war. And of course "they" had quite a few comebacks of their own - shallow water sailors comes to mind and of course the "Hooligan Navy." Although having sailed the oceans of this world - they were not and are not all that shallow! As for the Hooligan part - I represent that remark.

Thanx again and "see ya" soon.

Just a quick note to mention that Juneaudog has become siberianmo. Or more correctly, he had an old account as siberianmo that he couldn't access and created a new account. After realizing this, and discussing things with me, he decided to retain his original name and I merged the two accounts into one accordingly. Alas I cannot alter the one post he accidentally made as a guest above, so that moniker lives on and hence my note regarding what transpired so as to not confuse anyone. Hopefully!
