After the stir of the past few days, and in consultation with Austin (owner of the hosting service), I've made some changes and improvements to the forum. Two will benefit all members, the rest will only benefit those who choose to contribute not only with their words but also their wallets.

The first two general changes that will appear, either later today or tomorrow depending on my time availability (on my way to Boston on 2250 as I write this), entail two new forums that people have requested. The first is the requested "Train Advocates" forum for discussions on how to promote train travel & funding for same and for stats to help support said discussions. This will be open to all, including guests.

The second is a general discussion forum where one can discuss pretty much anything one likes. Our politics rules will still remain in force in this forum; as well as the no personal attacks rules. This forum will only be available to members.

Now turning to those who choose to support our forum financially. Three special groups have been created entitled Bronze Members, Silver Members, and Gold Members. Which group you are assigned to is dependent upon the amount of your support. Lower amounts will place you in the Bronze level, middle of the road into Silver, and the highest amounts into the Gold level.

Each level provides for increased rights on our forum, including greater storage of PM's and the ability to invite more people to a conversation, increased photo storage, ability to edit posts without any time limit for as long as you remain a member of one of those special groups. How long you remain an enhanced member is based upon the size of your contribution. And starting one month prior to the expiration of your special membership, you can choose to renew at the same level or go to a higher level. Either way, that is added on as of the original date of expiration. In other words, if you have a 6 month membership and you renew 10 days before the end of the six month period; you don't lose those 10 days. Your renewal starts on the day your first term expires giving you another full 6 months.

In addition, all contributing members will have a special, exclusive forum to discuss anything that they like. This forum will not be seen by any guests or any regular members; only those who have contributed to support AU and the senior level staff members can see & post in this special forum.

Additionally, Austin & his team are working on setting things up to create an ad free experience for those who remain in these special membership groups. I don't as yet have a time frame as to just when that will happen; but they are working on it and hopefully it will only be a few weeks before its in place.

For the time being it has been decided that these special groups will be assigned as what we call secondary groups. This means that it will NOT be readily apparent as to how has given money and at what level. There is a slight chance that Austin's team may need for these groups to be used as primary groups for the Ad solution; but it is hoped that won't be the case.

Assuming that remains a constant, then unless a large majority of those who do contribute decide that they would like their special status to be on display, my current intentions are to leave things as they are. And only those who contribute will know who else did the same by seeing who posts in the special "Contributing Members Lounge" forum.

Turning to the levels, we've tried to make this available to all by having both small amounts and larger amounts. And other than varying the amounts of photo & PM storage, basically the biggest difference is the longevity of your special membership.

A $10 membership gets one a Bronze level for 6 months.

A $20 membership = Bronze for 1 year.

A $30 membership = Silver for 18 months.

A $50 membership = Silver for 3 years.

A $100 membership = Gold for 6 years.

In closing please let me stress that NO one is required to give anything. But doing so does help to ensure the continued existence of AU. And yes, your contribution is going to a "for profit" company, Group Builder. But they are not only hosting us, they update the software, they brought in Tapatalk, and keep an eve on the day to day operations of the server. These are all things that Anthony either did of his own free will or in the case of Tapatalk never did.

So I hope and ask that all consider that when deciding whether or not to become a contributing member. Again, no one must do so; and save for the special forum not giving will not have a major impact on what you can see & do around the forum.

Finally; my thanks, as well as Austin's, to those who have already stepped up to the plate to help ensure that AU remains available to all!

Excellent work Alan B. I think this is long overdue, and you have structured it so if someone / anyone doesn't want to pay a nickel, then they don't miss a thing.

Kudos, Kudos, Kudos.

btw, r u never not on a train?

Have you checked your demographics? What percentage are old white guys like me living on Social Security. Hope you all enjoy your "MEMBERSHIPS". I'm OUT.

Or you could stay. As far as I can read, they're taking nothing away from the free experience. In fact, they're adding two forums accessible to all members. They're just adding some incentives tied to paying money to the forum.

The free experience is not being downgraded at all, far as I can tell.

Excellent Plan Alan, Thanks for your Hard Work! :hi: As a Retired Government Worker on a Fixed Small Pension, Medicare and Social Security I'm not made of Money either , but I'm going to remain a Member, take time to Explore the various Options and decide what Level, of Support , if any, is Worthwhile to me as a Hobbyist! I Hopefully I Can Afford to at least Raise my Membership Level a Little but we'll see! Costs are Rising Really Fast here in Austin (Rent, Utilities, Auto Expenses,Food, Cable and Internet, Phone etc.) so I'm sure it wont be the Platinum/Diamond Level for this Old Luddite!

That is correct. Nothing is being removed for anyone, just a couple of things were added for those who CHOSE to subscribe. For those who do not want to subscribe (and there is NO requirement to do so), nothing at all has changed.

This is absolutely wonderful, Alan. Great work.

I look forward to the day when the content I contribute isn't filled with ads and I can join the cool kids forum.

Until then, I'll enjoy the "Random" area, and I've got great hopes for the "Rail Advocacy" forum. Hopefully we can harness some of the energy of people here and make a difference in support of passenger rail.

As one who has benefited greatly from all the advice and information provided in the AU forum in my past seven years of membership, I would be interested in contributing some funds to keep the forum up and running. If I figured the time and money saved from that information while riding Amtrak and planning trips, it would definitely be in the hundreds/maybe thousands of $$$.

It is true that many of our members do not have extra funds in their budget to contribute and therefore; it is good that their benefits received from the forum will continue as usual. For those of us who can throw in a few bucks once in a while, I would be happy to do so.

I agree that those that "want" to subscribe will have extra benefits, but some of us, myself included, may "WANT" to join but CANNOT due to the limited Social Security income. I completely understand where brentrain17 is coming from. I will hang around for the free stuff, as I get lots of information, but having a section that is just for those that pay, makes me feel like I am less important, not by my own doing. Plus they will have areas to go post where they can laugh at us that can't see it. Not makes for a very comfortable feel. But before someone attacks me, this is just my opinion and feelings, right or wrong in your eyes.

I agree with June statement. The extra are nice, but a forum just for payed members is overkill. We don't need a Coach vs Sleeper type of classification. I support because I can.

June, first I think that brentrain17 was thinking that the entire forum was going paid and that he would be unable to see anything if he didn't pay.

Next, I do appreciate your situation, one reason that I requested that Austin provide lower amounts than the original $30. There is now a $10 level that is available.

That is certainly not true; this forum is only as rich as all of its members and we need everyone. Think of it this way; if they weren't contributing then there might not even be any free stuff left to see. Yet I still must do something extra for those who do help to keep the lights on as it were.

Plus they will have areas to go post where they can laugh at us that can't see it. Not makes for a very comfortable feel.
That would be a rules violation and would result in the deletion of the post. This special forum isn't intended to allow one to feel superior over another. Yes, society will probably always exist with the "have's" and the "have not's". But I for one don't believe that just because someone have's it, that it somehow makes them superior. We are all people first and therefore deserving of respect IMHO. Which is why it somes times drives me crazy when people get down on other's here and I play a tug of war between trying to largely allow freedom of speech vs. the desire to delete a hypercritical post by a member not believing what a guest posted.

But laughing at those who don't have it behind their backs is not something that I'm going to tolerate. This special lounge is simply to be a place for them to discuss things like the weather, a special trip, etc. It will not be a place to put down others.

June, I think Alan's correct. I'd bet that well over 99% of any member who chooses to pay, at any level, will still spend 99% of their time and post(ings) on the free side. Just MHO tho.

What no extra AGR points for sign up. I know of a guy that works over there, I am sure we can get something done. :)
Of course you get AGR points if you use your AGR Card to sign up  But the_traveler is out of luck since he cannot use AGR points to sign up ;)

I guess I'll just have to use my AGR points for a train trip instead! :giggle:

As a retiree with huge medical expenses & a limited income, this all sounds fair for all members! If you want/can contribute you will get the extras asked for and if you choose not to contribute you lose nothing! All's right with the world!

Hey everyone!

I don't know if anyone here remembers me, but I used to hang out here pretty regularly about a year ago. I stopped by because I read some distressing news about the Southwest Chief, so I logged on to get the skinny. I'm blown away by all the changes.

I make (almost) bupkes, but I have decided to become a member, even though I haven't been around for a long while, and very rarely post.

This, what you're doing here, is important. Well worth supporting. I understand that many,if not most, may not be able to contribute, and technically, I'm probably in that bucket, but with stuff like this, I often find myself asking myself, what other pleasures, however small do I allow myself?

I stress that I'm only talking about myself here, no one else. But when I'm rigorously honest with myself, I know that my coffees and bagels and (like today) baskets of blueberries, which were excellent, BTW,add up.So, yeah, I can and will find the moolah.

I would be devastated if I surfed over here and this site, and this community were gone--even though I'm more or less an adjunct.

So thanks for giving me an opportunity to make something that I highly value more tangible. Good stuff.

Just my thoughts...
