I was wondering about the quoting rules / etiquette on Amtrak Unlimited.

IMHO too many of all these great and interesting threads are very very difficult to read because of the tons of nested quotes.

There really aren't any.

My personal opinion is to quote only what you need, but on the list of things to get bent out of shape over, this doesn't even register.

I do agree, somewhat.

It does make it hard sometimes to see 5 or 6 "quotes" before the answer finally appears. I always just include the quote, or parts of the quotes, needed and delete (erase) the rest. (Remember each start must have a "[ quote]" and each end must have a "[ /quote]" - without the first space.)

Otherwise, as Ryan said, it is not even worth thinking about.

A training I will go ... !

Ok

I just thought the moderators could do something about this, or maybe a forum setting which only allows a certain number of nested quotes.

I don't know for sure, but I think I was told once that 7 is the magic number. That is, there can't be more than 7 nests before the new quote starts. Maybe Alan will know for sure.

Doesn't seem to be seven...

Seven, for some reason was in my head from discussions I've had with the admins. Guess it isn't so from what you proved. Maybe as the software has been updated it has changed, or maybe there is a setting. Eventhough I have admin privileges I can't access those settings, if there are any, so we'll wait for Anthony or Alan to let us know.

Thanks for doing that test.

The only time I've seen the nested quote format as a problem is when it causes somebody to make a snarky reply to the wrong person and a flame war breaks out.
