Are you talking about 2012 or 2013? You can Book Up To 11 Months in Advance and these are Very Popular Trains that Fill Up Fast and Go to High Bucket (Most Expensive Rail Fare and Sleeper Prices) Quickly! And you WILL have to Overnight in CHI on Your Nickel, the Zephyr Leaves Before the SWC Arrives in CHI!! One of our Members has developed Amsnag.com,, you can Google it to Check Prices up to 30 days @ a Time, Please check it out! Id go ahead and Book ASAP,(are you Paying for this Trip?, If So keep Checking to See if Prices Go Down, it does happen!) If AGR Award it wont matter, in fact the More it Costs the Better the Deal!! , but Remember that it Costs more Points for certain Routes and Catagories of Awards Starting April 1st! And the Correct Train Numbers are SWC from LAX-CHI #4 and the CZ from CHI-EMR is #5!!! (#7 is the Empire Builder from CHI-SEA!!)

Also, the correct code for Emeryville is EMY!

Start checking fares as early as possible! Usually, the earlier you book, the cheaper, but this has kinda changed in recent years. So keep doing 30-day searches on Amsnag, and get a low bucket if you see one. I think lowest bucket right now CHI-EMY is about $150 for Coach, $300 for a Roomette. Highest I spotted was $220 and $700, respectively. Don't know about LAX-CHI.

Don't blame me if my fares aren't right!

I would overnight in chicago. If the Chief runs late, then you will miss your connection in Galesburg. If you have sleepers booked, you may not be able to get one on the following day's train if you book a same day connection.

Just FYI, the SWC Eastbound is #4, not 5.

This summer we are doing the transfer from 4 to the CZ in Galesburg. There is a 4 hour layover there so hopefully it will not be a problem.

As said, if you want to go all the way to Chicago, you will have to overnight in Chicago.
