Two of us will travel in late June from Seattle to Ashland, Oregon. How scenic is Coast Starlight route to Klamath Falls? Is that the best place to get off the train for Ashland, or would Eugene make more sense? Is checked baggage service available to both? What type of seat makes the most sense for this trip, which would apparently be mostly in daylight?

The thruway connection from Klamath Falls you will have to stay the night in Klamath Falls, the trains arrives at 9:50 PM and the Amtrak bus leaves at 10:30 AM the next day. Amtrak does not operate a thruway from Eugene to Ashland and the Greyhound leaves to early for you to catch no matter what train you take.

If you want scenery, I would suggest going to Klamath Falls. The best part of the trip is between Eugene and Klamath Falls, as it crosses the Cascade range on that route. However going southbound, you risk getting to that part in the dark. Since you are going in June, you might have some light, as long as the train is ontime. To almost guarantee the scenery, you'll have to take the train northbound, as it leaves KF in the morning.

With that said though, I'm not sure if you wanted to take the connecting bus to Ashland. Unfortunetly, that connection only meets passengers getting off the northbound Coast Starlight. On the return you can only get on the southbound Coast Starlight. I know it doesn't make sense. So you'll have to arrange for a ride or a rental car to Ashland, or an overnight stay there.
