In 2011 I reached Select Plus for the first time. I've enjoyed the perks, and even took advantage of the companion coupons. However 2011 was a pretty dismal year for me on the rails. Although Chase did give me the Credit Card so I earned about 35000 miles this year only like 2,000 or so were rail points. I just opened my mail for today and inside was a Select Package for 2012 saying I was an AGR select member until 2/28/13 and there were 3 upgrade coupons and 3 Club Acela day passes inside with my name and AGR number on them. I am really confused I certainly didn't end up making it to 5000 this year, and yet here I have a select package on my desk. My understanding was even if you were select plus you could go back to being a regular in just like that if you failed to garner 5 or 10 thousand rail points. Was this an error on AGR's part or basically how did this happen. Although I can't say I'm disappointed I just can't believe I have a select package sitting on my desk...

Looking at the AGR site I only confirmed I only earned 1700 rail points in 2011, and the site just shows that I will be Select Plus until 2/29/12, I can't find anything about my status past that date.

It is not uncommon for airline FF programs to provide a "soft landing" for upper tier elites who don't qualify for any status the next year. They bump the member down one or two levels for the next year, but not all the way down to dirt status. It is a business decision to maintain brand loyalty recognizing that the lack of miles for the year may be just a one-off. Maybe AGR is doing the same thing for S+ members?

It was certainly a nice suprise and I quite happy that I atleast can keep my 3 year streak of holding some kind of status alive, but I'd like to think I read these boards a lot and this is certainly the first time I've heard this happen, so I thought I would pose the question. I don't think I'd go asking about this on FlyerTalk with the AGR insider over there that might jepordize my situation

I heard that for passengers who sleep on the Cascades from Seattle to Portland,
they will receive Amtrak Select status for one year regardless of the number of rail points
earned in that year. Congratulations Stephen!!

I've never heard of a soft landing for AGR before either; but it could be something new that AGR is doing.
Alan,

Take care and take trains!
