Just wanted to say YEAHH!

Aloha

On being the first.

But please remember we want this section on how to get the pictures and no to be a general display area. Hopefully here we can help each other have better pictures in the areas that relate to the subject of the picture.

One art from Film is the use of filters, many of these filters work in digital formats also.

While beginning a forum for the discussion of train photography without any pictures of trains is certainly an interesting choice, in my view - and I could be wrong - showing pictures of trains to discuss, in a forum dedicated to train photography, is sort of central to the whole concept.

With that in mind, here is a train photo that uses photographic techniques quite common in both older and modern train photography. Let us evaluate it carefully:

Posted Image

Now let us discuss both the positive and lesser aspects of this vintage view, with an eye to discussion of what the photographer might have done to improve the image.

Ideas?

Correct: This photograph would have been much improved, from the train photography perspective, by the elimination of human beings from the frame and - conversely - the inclusion of the car numbers of the streetcars, which would have allowed latter day viewers to determine the genesis of the view far more accurately than is currently possible. Shame on the photographer for not making such a simple adjustment for our benefit!

Hopefully in this new forum we'll see many more poorly-conceived shots that everybody can tear to bits for the hell of it. That's what learning is all about!

WhoozOn1st has hit the nail, or picture, on the head about what this section is all about. And just think his example is older than many of us here.

I'm glad to see an area devoted to photography! Would this also be the place to discuss issues pertaining to photographer's rights, harrassment by overzealous law enforcement, questions on what photo policies of different transit agencies are, etc?

I agree. This is a great addition to AU.

I would second Whooz's opinion that this thread would be a great place to allow members to post pictures so that they can be critiqued. Perhaps this could be facilitated with a limit on the number of pictures one can have critiqued in a given period.
Amtrak: 21,626 miles, 18 routes, 39 states, 1 province. First trip 5/2005. Miles in 2012: 4,951.

The purpose of this section is to make us better rail photographers. So submitting work is fine. The rules do not change though as this forum is not a host. As to limits the only thing is one at a time, and/or use a thread for each review. when asking for help, review, Please include particulars about the tools used.

I'm a little confused by this directive. If only one picture can be posted at a time then the rules do appear to be changing as previously this was not an issue, at least to my knowledge. Are we now losing the ability to include multiple pictures in a single post that was previously allowed, or does the restriction of one photo per post only apply to the photography forum? Does including the EXIF metadata in the source meet the "inclusion of particulars" requirement?

Stop taking everything so literally, folks.

Post pictures. Enjoy and discuss. It you want feedback, a description of how you got the shot will make that feedback better and more tailored...

Aloha I went back an made changes to my post to clarify the intent.

Picture attached to general messages are not changed.

Trying again to be clear. When posting a picture in this section for Technical review of the photograph please post only the image to be reviewed along with the exposure/ EXIF metadata in the source. Shutter speed, Apature used make a difference when making a photograph.
