If you are interested... you can view some of the pictures I took during the Gathering Here. For the most part, I stuck with scenery pictures, allthough Whooz (in the distance with his Fez on) and jacorbett70 (or at least his back) can be seen in the SSL picture. I think that may be Whooz in the Engine pic as well.

Nice pics there, Chris, and yeah, that's me by the engine. Hopefully others will also share their Gathering IV views by posting 'em, and I expect to be doing so once all the lame-oh shots are culled.

EDIT: Meaning it might be awhile.Posted Image

Check the third page of the photos near the lower left for the bulletin board shot. It shows MKT's Katy Flyer.

One might think the Katy Flyer was named for a female named Katy.

Not so.

Look at the letters M K T. That was the railroad name and it stood for Missouri Kansas Texas RR.

For some reason, in popular language MKT was considerd a tongue twister,I guess, so people just called it the K T.for awhile.

Well, the phonetic spelling for K T would be "kay tee". That quickly evolved into Katy, like the name of a woman. So far as I know, the nickname Katy became so prominent that it was used about 99.99999999 per cent of the time, and thus one of its trains was named the Katy Flyer.

As always Bill thanks for the information about trains and roads from the old days! The MKT came through my hometown when I was a boy. (so did MOPAC, now sometimes the Eagles are routed over either sets of tracks when track work is going on or a freight has problems etc.)I still remember riding the Katy Flyer many times, also the Texas Special came through but didnt stop in my dinky little town! When it stopped in Austin it blocked Congress Avenue which was the San Antonio-Dallas Hiway! :o This was the Deluxe Katy train back in the day, what's so funny is that the Texas Eagle from MOPAC DID stop in my city! (2 depots for a city of 5,000 people!) :o

Nice shot!

That Train Shed looks alot like the conceptual drawings of the new shed for Milwaukee. I wonder if that's where the inspiration came from. Hmmmm....

Thanks to all for sharing your photos, I wish I could have been there!

Note, how diverse our group is. Here, Long Train from New Jersey snaps a picture in Kansas City; I,from Atlanta, tell something about the train; and then,we find out that Jim, from Texas, has actually ridden the train many times.

What a small world this is.

Hi,
One funny coincidence also is that I actually posted a question on our forum a couple of years ago about a song with the words "She caught the Katy, left me a mule to ride.. train pulled out.. I walked on behind.."
I believe Bill and others answered then too, and I was pleased to see a picture of the old flyer in the museum at St. Louis station..I took a snapshot of it too!

Ed
