If you would be interested in Seattle or Portland next I would be willing to do a lot of the logistical work. Jim Hudson knows I am bona fide.

We would enjoy either one. Been to PDX a number of times but you can never get enough of Portland :P
Have never spent more than a few hours in Seattle so that would be great as well. :)
From Seattle, would there be time to make a run to Vancouver on the train?? :o

My vote for either one of those. We need to go to Vancouver, BC to visit some friends. This would work well for us.

It's technically possible to do a same day turn to Vancouver, but it would be a very long day. And then there is the hassle of obtaining the correct documents to even cross the border.
Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Never having been to Portland, it has my vote.

As much as I love Vancouver, Seattle would work as well if a Vancouver run could be arranged.

Routes Traveled: Desert Wind, Southwest Chief, Missouri Mule, Empire Builder, Capitol Ltd., Lincoln Service, Lake Shore Ltd., Missouri River Runner, City of New Orleans, Cardinal, Silver Meteor, Texas Eagle, Cascades, Broadway Ltd., Acela, Downeaster, Sunset Ltd., Coast Starlight, California Zephyr   64,137 Amtrak miles

I vote for Vancouver first, then Portland, then Seattle. Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with any of them. Forget about Phoenix unless it was during their "winter."

Over 50,000 people just like you recently signed a petition to expand high speed passenger rail in the United States of America.

Long live The Coast Starlight, The California Zephyr, The Empire Builder, The Southwest Chief, and The Canadian.

Phoenix it is, then! :P

D'oh!

On the plus side Phoenix would cheaper and easier for me on all counts. I guess I just assumed we'd be focusing on cities that still have Amtrak passenger rail services? If we were going to spend any time in Phoenix I think it should be focused on pro-rail activism to push them to find a way to bring Amtrak back. As for relaxing and experiencing the local flavor I already know I'd like Seattle more and I've heard great things about Vancouver and Portland. Although you could probably name almost any substantial city on the West coast and I'd still prefer it to boring old Phoenix. ;)

Are you talking about Vancouver, WA? Passport is not required!

I have a passport and yet I've somehow never been to Canada, so I'm more than willing to cross the boarder and see what's over there. Even for folks who don't have passports or related identification there is still plenty of time to get it.

One way is to get rid of Senator John McCain (who by the way is from PhoenixPosted Image) who once said

Amtrak does not serve my state (of Arizona)!

Explain that to the people of Winslow, Flagstaff, Williams, Kingman, Yuma, Maricopa and Tucson!Posted Image

Though I would prefer that we remain focused on the Gathering at hand - St. Louis - I understand interest in the future. In that vein I think that Sacramento merits some consideration.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The one thing everyone needs to remember is that on forums such as this, all it takes is a computer, connection and the ability to hit a few keys and you can become an instant expert! Isn't technology great?
