i vote for pdx (partially as it is less than 400 miles from our home). the one drawback could be weather as october can be rainy. portland has a great light rail, streetcars, aerial tram (as part of the transit system but unfortunately not included in a day pass), self propelled diesels at one end of the system. pdx union station is beautiful (seattle's will be when finsihed but portland's is done). the willamette shore trolley i have never taken but it looks good. the oregon rail hist society has refurbished sp and spokane, portland and seattle steam engines (don't know about access). and powell's technical books has a great rail section.
