MrsFSS and I were passing through Atlanta today and we had a nice lunch with fellow forum member, Bill Haithcoat.

Wish we could have had more time to reminisce, but we had to be on the road again.

Thanks, Bill for sharing part of your day. Too bad we couldn't ride a train.

I'd buy a car or old train from either one of these guys! Considering their advanced years both probably still drive their first automobile (low mileage, only used to drive to/from the train station) and for sure know something about old trains! (sort of like me come to think of it!)

(Glad to see that the snow/ice is gone from Atlanta, time for Spring! (and to get the Crescent running to/from NOL 7 days a week once the track work is finished! )

Maybe congress might someday realize people don't ride trains that do not run.

Jim,

Since you mentioned original autos, I just have to tell you a funny story. I had met Bill I believe at least twice in NYC, prior to Kevin Korell and his son, along with myself taking a trip to Atlanta in 2004. We wanted to take in a bunch of trains while there, several of which are not reachable by Amtrak or public transit. The original plan was to just rent a car, but then Bill volunteered to use his car. IIRC, it was an Olds Cutlass 88, Bill please correct me if I'm wrong.

In any event, while Bill's car was in otherwise very good shape after all it got to Chattanooga and back with a side trip to the Blue Ridge Scenic RR, it had one minor flaw. The cloth ceiling was coming unglued from the roof. Bill had the bright idea to use some thumb tacks to hold it up. The worst places were in the back seat area.

Well poor Kevin and his son Michael spent much of the trip sitting on pins & needles as it were. They were forever picking up the thumb tacks and sticking them back in the ceiling. It was a trip that they'll never forget.

However, as I said earlier, Bill's car otherwise performed quite admirably and saved us all big bucks. So, even as we laugh about that trip from time to time, we still thank Bill for his most generous offer to play chauffer for 3 days.

And I know that all 4 of us enjoyed the train riding immensely. Bill was also an excellent host in both his current hometown and his original hometown (Chattanooga), pointing out things that we out of towner’s would never have known.

Thanks again Bill! :)
Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Great story Alan! These are the kinds of memories that money can't buy, and being able to share them is priceless as the MC commercial says! Have to laugh about the old car thing, my grandparents (my grandfather was a 40 yr. SP employee)had a 1952 Olds 88 that they kept till they couldnt drive anymore, my folks bought it as their second car and when I was able to drive it was my first car! Must have been a design defect cause the headliner kept coming loose and falling down, sure wish I still had that car! :)

Alan, you are correct about the older car.

My new car is a 1996 Nissan Maxima.

I saved the thumb tacks so they are ready to be applied should it become necessary.

It would be a serious understatement to say I am a bit more interested in trains than in cars!!!
